My papas waltz

My papa’s waltz is a poem that tells us of a moment shared by a father and his son. Theodore Roethke, in his poem ‘My papa’s waltz’, uses imagery, wordplay and symbolism to create a tone of nostalgia and pain in his discussion of the theme of family.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on My papa’s waltz specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The speaker tells us about his papa’s waltz dance and it symbolizes the relationship he has with his father. The dance did not come easy for the young boy because his father was intoxicated as he talked of â€Å"The whiskey on your breath† (Roethke 1). Furthermore, the speaker had to hold on to his father tightly â€Å"But I hung on like death† (Roethke 3) even though his dad’s breath reeked of alcohol, and was enough to make him dizzy. He says they romped and the pans fell on the floor from the shelf. Perhaps he was afraid of his father and loved him at the same time and being a small boy he did not have much choice, but dance with his father. Moreover, the use of imagery in the poem shows that the speaker experienced some pain in the family. For instance, the simile â€Å"But I hung on like death† (Roethke 3) shows that the boy had to hold the dad tightly because he was drunk to avoid falling. The fact that the father was drunk means he could hurt the small boy unintentionally as he missed his steps as they romped. The mention of the word †death† shows some fear in the relationship between father and son because drunkenness could lead to violence. However, violence is not mentioned explicitly in the poem. The wordplay technique the poet employs in the poem show that the speaker loved his father, but he also feared him. His father who towered above him and the speaker had to obey him. The boy had to waltz with his father and as they did so, he hit his right ear on his father’s buckle because he was a small one. He could not resist the dance even though it was not easy with the father missing steps. Besides, his mother’s expression showed she was not pleased with the pans falling on the floor and she was afraid of her son to be hurt during the dance. The speaker says â€Å"You beat time on my head† (Roethke 13) to show that his father may have hurt him by hitting him on the head and he may have endured such kind of incidences in his childhood.Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? However, the speaker also shows that his father was a man who made an effort to create some time and play with him even if it was at night before he went to bed. The small boy treasured the memory of spending time with his father and remembered that dance with nostalgi a. He did not want the waltz to end and clung on to his father’s shirt as they waltzed to bed. Finally, the speaker tells us of the waltzing event with his father that left a trace in his life. He remembered his father’s whiskey breath and it shows that his father was a drunk, but still he enjoyed the little things such as the waltz dance. His mother might not have approved the dancing, but the speaker treasured the time spent with his father. Works Cited Roethke, Theodore. My papa’s waltz. 2013. Carboxylic Acid and Derivatives

Chinese General Hospital Colleges First semester, AY 2013 2014 Organic Chemistry (Laboratory) Experiment no. 10 Date performed: September 5, 2013 Group 3 Names: Date submitted: September 19, 2013 De Gunman, Joanna Claries Del Mound, Marilyn Dells Rexes, Pamela L. Deal Cruz, Married Cyril M. Duran, Zenith Anne P l. Theoretical background Carboxylic acid derivatives are organic compounds containing the call group core structure attached to a Y group, which may be an electronegative atom or substitutes. The Y group acts as a leaving group in necrophilia call substitution. This mechanism is involved in hydrolysis, alcoholisms, and analysis reactions. As strong organic acids, carboxylic acids react with silver nitrate and sodium bicarbonate to form the corresponding carboxylic salts. Among the carboxylic acid derivatives, call halides are the most reactive and amides the least. Thus, the reactions of these compounds with a given reagent vary with regard to the rate, thermometric, and even the completion of the reaction. Call chlorides, due to their reactivity, are good starting materials for synthesis. Esters and amides are important functional groups in bimolecular like fats and proteins. All carboxylic acid derivatives yield the parent carboxylic acid upon reaction with water. Moreover, one derivative can be converted into another, provided the former is more reactive than the latter. II. Objectives To differentiate the reactivates of carboxylic acid derivatives. To distinguished carboxylic acid derivatives using classification tests To explain through chemical equations and mechanisms the reactions involved in each test. Ill. Why we can't wait-martin luther king Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Why we can't wait-martin luther king - Essay Example Martin Luther King Jr represented the African-American community, but in essence, this translates to all minority communities who lived an oppressed life. This oppression came about following colonization and the slave trade where the rights of those perceived to a weak community were subjected to a wide range of discrimination. Segregation and discrimination with regard to race, gender and education were outlawed following advocacy for civil rights. This marks a critical step towards generating independence among communities. This clearly illustrates that even as King fought for the rights of African-Americans, the benefits would be felt across different communities both regionally and nationally. King mounted a challenge to oppression by defying the status quo, which eventually got support from other members of the community other than African-Americans. However, there still exist a wide disparity based on ethnicity, race, religion and gender in modern America. This creates the need for more activism and effective leadership to bridge the gap, eliminating existing disparities. It is the tradition with most advocates of social justice to apply rhetorical strategies to engage their opponents in order to refute their claims beyond reasonable doubts. Martin Luther King is no exception as highlighted in most of his speeches, letters, and books particularly Why We Can’t Wait, which is the subject of this paper. The book was written following the conclusion of the Birmingham campaign and the Washington March in 1963.

The Role of Strategic Entrepreneurship Dissertation

The Role of Strategic Entrepreneurship - Dissertation Example Particular attention would is given to how they are applied in detail. At the end of this chapter, the proponent carefully elaborates the need to use of structural equation modeling, as a tool to put finally everything in detail into a model with valid empirical implications. This research would want to find out more about strategic entrepreneurship in the midst of prevailing tough competition. Concerning this, it is the main goal of the proponent to identify information with empirical evidence if each firm could still consider achieving individual competitive edge even if they would employ relevant competitive strategies. However, in order to identify this point, the proponent should ensure identification of the relevant methodology that would serve the objective of the study while it also would ensure validity of the output of the research study. This research aims to understand more about strategic entrepreneurship in the midst of prevailing dynamic competition. The proponent would want to find out if a firm could still guarantee competitive advantage even if they would employ relevant competitive strategies. Therefore, the following general question should generate answer at the end. When firms engage in strategic entrepreneurship does it establish temporal competitive advantage in a dynamic environment when competing vis-Ã  -vis other competitors in the industry with the objective of creating value for the society as a whole, shareholder of the firms, and the individuals? As already stated, the proponent would want to employ both quantitative and qualitative information from the existing studies linked up with strategic entrepreneurship. Empirical investigation is therefore necessary in order to create substantial empirical evidence based on the existing theoretical concepts linked up with the subject matter that the proponent considers in this research study.

Elizabethan Women Essay Example for Free

Elizabethan Women Essay The social standards for most women of high nobility were to wear large corseted dresses and apply pallid makeup (History of Elizabethan Women). These women were not allowed a say in anything. They had to follow what the male said; however, if they did not, they would have received a harsh punishment (Elizabethan Women). Therefore the majority of these women would learn to obey quickly. In the Elizabethan Era the upper class women are not permitted to work because they were considered not as strong, or as deft as men(Elizabethan Women). For example, in the movie Shakespeare In Love, women were not permitted to be actresses because it was illegal and extremely inappropriate for a woman to be seen on stage. Viola de Lesseps loved poetry; therefore, she auditioned for Shakespeare’s play dressed as a boy. She went against the advice of her maid and later got caught by the stage master. In the film, she defied the queen’s law but the queen overruled her mistake because of the bet the queen had with Lord Wessex. During the Elizabethan Era there were a plethora of family alliances formed by arranged marriages. In the film, Shakespeare In Love, Viola de Lesseps was coerced into a marriage with Lord Wessex at a very inopportune time. She was in love with Will Shakespeare, but the majority of women in this era were not allowed a say in these affairs (History of Elizabethan Women). These women suppressed their emotions for the man they loved. She was obliged to marry Lord Wessex and follow her father and mother’s orders although she was in love with another man. While women of today prefer have very dark, tan skin, most women from the Elizabethan Era preferred pale white skin. In fact the whiter you were the wealthier you looked because most of the lower class women worked outside which was why they were so tan (Elizabethan Women). Their dark skin tones showed they worked for their money while the upper class women stay indoors most of the day. For example, in Shakespeare In Love, Viola de Lesseps always had a pale face with a big flouncy dress on. She never looked rampant like the street children or their mothers, but always stately and noble. John Madden fairly and accurately demonstrates how women were treated in the Elizabethan Era in his film, Shakespeare In Love. He shows the intricate clothing and colorless make up of these noble women. Also he explains the unfair and loveless arranged marriages that often occurred in the Elizabethan Era.

He received his Bachelors of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939, and Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1942. At Princeton he worked on the atomic bomb project and revolutionized scientific approaches to quantum mechanics. He then worked, for two years, as the youngest member of the team at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, that developed the first atomic bomb. For the next five years he worked as the chair of theoretical physics at Cornell University, and then as such at the California Institute of Technology, where he continued working until the end of he life. He received numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965, wrote many best selling books, helped a small country named Tuva, was noted for his bongo drumming skills and witty lectures, and played a key role in the Rogers Commission hearings on the Challenger space shuttle accident in 1986. He was married three times, succeeded by Gweneth Howarth and his two children by her, Carl Richard, and Michelle Catherine. He died at age 69 of abdominal cancer, eight years after diagnosis. On winning the Nobel Peace Prize Feynman holds brain of Gregg From his doctoral work on quantum mechanics, he developed Feynman Diagrams" to explain rates for electromagnetic and weak interaction particle processes. One of the things that made Feynman Diagrams, and much of his other work, remarkable was the fact that Feynman took a more visual approach to physics, avoiding complicated manipulation of equations in favor of more easily understood diagrams. Feynman Diagrams are still used as the standard method for describing particle inte... ...s in a form that's still widely used throughout theoretical physics, in every field." Richard Feynman: "My mother [Lucille Phillips] taught me that the highest forms of understanding that we can achieve are laughter and human compassion". Fuddy Meers Essay

They play was quite an interesting play with its use of comedy and tragedy. The actors did a terrific job on portraying the characters. The set was small so it was much easier to see their reactions. The introduction to the play was pretty unique with those people in tight pants and glitter all over everybody in the lobby. They never broke character no matter what went on in the lobby. Later they used as prompts on stage which was pretty interesting because at times I was so into the play I forgot they were there acting as a car or a door. Although Claire was the main character, the actor who played Millet had the best acting on stage. They way he switch between the two personality was amazing and hilarious. He portrayed the character really well and had me believing for a bit that he actually had a dual personality. His entrance on to the stage in every scene was perfect, every time he can on he was really enthusiastic and his enthusiasm did not fluctuate too much in the play, even though he was not playing one but two characters. The actress who played Claire portrayed the character well. From the beginning to the end she really captured the characters and her emotions. When she first entered on stage I was confused of what was going as she was walking aimlessly across the stage but later realized that was the whole point. She wanted the audience to believe she was confused and lost; and she did. I notice her break the fourth wall every now and then as she looked into the audience. I suppose it was part of the scrip to interact with the audience because she mostly did it when she was on the side doing random things with the people in tight pants. Her entrances where perfect every time, even though the scenes where being switched off between her and Richard in the car, she never seen to loose focus. You could clearly see every expression on her face which made it more realistic to the audience. The actor who played Richard could have done a better job on portraying his character. He wasn’t terrible it just looked like he was trying to hard; it just didn’t seem as natural. For example in the scene he gets pulled over by the lady cop, he was a little too jittery; no one really acts like that. Overall he did pretty decent job but could have done much better. The limping man, who was Zack than later we found out he was Claire ex husband, did an amazing job portraying his character. It wasn’t only his facial deformation, which I have to admit looked pretty real to me, but was the way he acted out the character, from the lisp to the scary deep voice, that made him truly incredible. He made the audience believe he was really deformed. The scene when he first took Claire and he was struggle to enter the window was pretty hilarious but he also gave an insight to what he character was going through. They endowed many things on the set, most of the things looked pretty realistic. In the scene when Richard and his son go looking for Claire they used a paper joint to endow the marijuana they were smoking but they did not portray being under the influence as well as they could have. Usually people that smoke pot are really laid back and giggly with short term memory loss not knowing what their doing half the time. They also endowed the officer’s gun which still look pretty real. When Claire was running up and down the stage with that knife it seem pretty dangerous but from where I was sitting I couldn’t even tell if it was real or fake. The overall play was excellent and it gave me an opportunity to learn from these actors what to do and not to do. They really had some tremendous actors on this set who did an amazing job on convincing the audience on what was going on in the play.

Sodoma Giovanni Antonio Bazzi essays

Sodoma Giovanni Antonio Bazzi essays Name: Sodoma Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (Italian Sienese) Title: Christ Presented to the People (Ecce Homo) Sodoma was trained in Lombardy, but most of his career was spent in Siena, where he was, together with Beccafumi, the major figure. This work dates from the last decade of his life. The use of contrasting figure types of sfumato derives his study of the words of Leonardo da Vinci and has a powerful emotive effect. The turbaned figure is Pilate, who presents the resigned but dignified Christ to the viewer as an object of contemplation. Though cut down, the late sixteenth century frame is of fine quality. Oil on canvas; 23 5/8 x 23 Â ¼ in. (60 x 59.1 cm) The painting is a depiction of Jesus Christ being presented to the people. He is the center of attention. Light is being cast on Jesus as opposed to the shadow being cast on other people surrounding Him. To me, it seems that God was shining a light down from Heaven. His body looks very realistic by showing the cuts and bruises across His chest. The thorn crown protruding his forehead made blood drip down into his face. Shadows show every line and curve of His body. It looks real and very naturalistic. This painting was more of a close-up picture. You can only see the upper body area. You dont see anything else. There appears to be 4 other people surrounding Jesus Christ. On the left, it looks to me as if he was Judas, one who betrayed Jesus Christ by being dishonest and committing treachery. The man on the right wears a red cape and head wrap. He looks like Pontius Pilate. He became famous by persecuting Jesus Christ. The other people behind the three main characters must be the followers of Jesus Christ because you see their face a little bit. It shows the emotion and the sorrow on their face. They also look like they have a halo over their heads. There is no background to the painting. It is all black. ...

The role of government in a free market economy Essay

The role of government in a free market economy - Essay Example The transaction between the buyer and seller fosters cohesion and a free market. Competitive and free economies allow sellers to meet customers’ demands according to their likings and distribute inputs among manufacturers. Division of labor is important in an organization because it facilitates a balance in the economy to reduce the cost of production (Mathur par 2). The government plays a critical role in a free economy by proving a legal framework of enforcing contracts and resolving contractual disputes. The government also protects individual rights to property and establishes a sound economic environment by proving a stable trading currency. The government also provides public goods such as schools, hospitals and street lighting that would be costly for the private sector to provide in a market economy. The government also corrects the market failures such as economic downturns and external costs like air pollution. The government maintains the competition in the free mar ket economy through regulating the activities of monopolies and stabilizes the national economy by regulating the unemployment level, the inflation rate and enhancing the rate of economic growth. The government taxation policies also help in redistributing income in the economy by taxing the rich heavily and using the taxes to provide social services to the low income citizens. A free market elevates the overall economy of a country, but there are unfortunate situations when a free market has dysfunctions. Economists term these circumstances as market failure (Mathur par 3). Market failure occurs due to monopoly power, environmental pollution by manufacturers, common property resources, misinformation and risky business ventures. Market failure prompts the government to intervene by enabling the functioning and fluidity of these small markets. The role of government in free markets is to design, enact and finally implement reasonable market policies and laws that ensure customers an d sellers’ rights to buy, sell and own property under positive rates and trading environment. Government requires the cooperation of all free markets to improve the living standards of citizens. Private sectors that continue to improve the overall economy are fully supported by the government and their clients. The government develops institutional and democratic economic structures that guarantee strong and stable economic, political, social and environmental aspects of the country. Regulation of monopolies Monopoly power implies that a single of few manufacturers and sellers control the whole market. The entrepreneurs that control the whole market are referred to as monopolists. They restrict the production of goods and services and charge high rates. Monopolists have the ultimate control of the market thus facilitating the foreclosure of small businesses and gaining the competitive advantage. The government intervenes by creating antitrust laws that split or cease the mono polistic practices (Mathur par 4). Regulating these monopolies promotes the interest of other small-scale business communities and the public. Gas and electric services in the U.S were previously controlled by private sectors. Electricity and gas are essential in running businesses, travelling, cooking, building and construction, medical practices, water and

Sport Tourism Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Sport Tourism - Assignment Example sts of Olympic Games being held in Canada may be marred by unending debates just before and after the end of the games as is the case in other nations that have hosted the Olympic Games before. Ideally, it is not possible the exact cost of staging world games of such magnitude since there are no accepted standards and mechanisms of assessing related expenditures. However, the staging nation obviously has to benefit in many ways from such a global participation thus it must provide an increase in GDP, creates numerous jobs, the influx of sport tourists and normal tourists are known to flock in the staging nations hence provision of more revenues for the hosting as well as other cities of the host nation. Small and medium businesses usually receive a big boost from such a sporting event as the spending power is normally high. The presence of high performance sports people is a form of inspiration to the youths of a nation such as Canada. The hosting nation also receives a major facelift on its infrastructural set up. Although supporters of Olympic Games do argue that the benefits are much more that the negative effects, still such a sporting event must bring problem of overcrowding, targets of hooliganism that includes terrorist activities, increased taxes and cost of living due to high spending and ready market for products and services. The Games also disrupts the normal systems of a country as it is common to find diversion of roads and in most cases schooling activities are in jeopardy as focus is shifted to such an event. In addition, there are some unanticipated burdens that may only show up if the Games are largely perceived to be a failure thus the host nation image in shattered in the global branding (Robinson & Novelli,
